I've heard before they can be dangerous to our birds. I'll try to find the information I'm thinking of, but I think it pertains to the chemicals they use and the fact that MOST pet birds don't need a lice/mite protector at all.

I would not use them, I've read the fumes they give off can be toxic to a bird's respiratory system.

I have also read that they are toxic and unnecssary for indoor birds - I have read it in multiple sources.

I agree.

I was wondering why it would be nescessary, inless the house is infested or you do not take good care of them.

Our vet told us to avoid these things. Our birds don't need them.

Hello all,

When Rubi was 6 months old. She starting plucking her feathers by her tail- within a week she had a bald spot. I couldn't believe my baby was plucking. After researching it turned out she had mites.... I thought she was bored or I was not giving her too much attention.. I was really worry for her. I did not take her to the vet, but opted to spray her bald spot with hydroxide peroxide. I sprayed her whole cage with it and around the floor. Within 2 weeks she had grown her feathers.. I was amazed at what this can do.. when I sprayed her she felt calm and would want to go sleep. I also clean her cage with baking soda. I hope this helps! Also, just and FYI- mites are attracted to color cloth. If you think your bird has mites you should try this.

I need to clarify i didn't spray hydroxide peroxide directly into her skin... I took an 8 ounces bottle of water and I only dropped a teaspoon of peroxide into it. Then I sprayed her.

Still, it's best to consult with an avian vet prior to using any form of "home treatment" on a parrot. So many things are toxic to their systems that do not bother mammals.

As a general rule, birds only get mites from other birds. So unless your pets go "slumming" with wild birds, there is little to no chance of getting them.
