Some birds chew the feather after it has moulted to get the cellulose from it

Our birds will also play with their moulted feathers, it's pretty normal behaviour, but it's understandable to assume that they are plucking. The feathers themselves tell the real story.

This picture here, it looks like he is overpreening/barbering his feathers. I have a cockatoo that does this, and the more I bath her, the less she does it.

Barbering can be very frustrating to deal with. It's really hard to understand what motivates them, but if an increase in showering reduces the overpreening, then go for it.

I speculate that birds who "barber" have brittle feathers to begin with. Can anyone with a "barbering" bird verify this?

Please don't think my reply was the definitive reason, I was just merely saying that the feathers which have come off could be chewed up for that reason..

The fact that they are snipped in half in some cases and the sheer number of them would indicate this is more than simply chewing the odd feather imo..

Have you seen a Vet yet? That would be the first port of call to rule out any underlying medical symptoms.

:)

Oh dear, 'cellulose'! Beware of termites infesting your birds!
